SPACE TO PROCESS.

Seattle-based Phoenix Processors Limited Partnership (PPLP) engaged Glosten to help extend the life of the M/V Excellence, a 367-foot ABS-classed trawler-turned-factory-processor outfitted to weather the harsh conditions of the Bering Sea in winter. In addition to crucial upgrades that would keep the Excellence running and ensure regulatory compliance, this complex, multi-stakeholder project involved maximizing the ship’s square footage to expand its factory space and integrating new structural components and equipment.

Glosten was responsible for all the design, engineering, and stability work that entailed. Our production engineering group developed a 3D model of the new structure added to the vessel, allowing for the automated cutting of parts and prefabrication to reduce the construction schedule for minimal vessel downtime.

BIGGER AND BETTER.

During the project, Glosten worked closely with PPLP to adapt the ship to the new factory layout and implement additional modifications to streamline ship operations. We collaborated with stakeholders, fabricators, and the shipyard on production details while the Excellence was under construction. The entirety of the vessel’s casing structure above the upper deck was replaced, the factory areas were expanded, and tank modifications were made to increase the volume of the raw material hopper and fish oil tank. Improvements were also made to the engine casing and an auxiliary generator was installed.
