The JOIDES Resolution is a 407′ drill ship with sophisticated drilling tools and science facilities, and the ability to deploy almost six miles of drill string for extracting geophysical core samples from the ocean floor. It has an ice-strengthened hull allowing the vessel to conduct scientific ocean drilling expeditions in extreme environments.

Extensive Refit, Overseas Coordination
Transocean contracted Glosten in 2006 to develop the contract design package for an extensive refit of the JOIDES Resolution, replacing the living quarters and laboratory structures and making service-life extension repairs and upgrades. The project would require precise plans, specifications, and bid documents for the refit.
Contract Documents Support Competitive Bids
Glosten conducted extensive vessel surveys, and worked closely with the management and crew to fully design and document all of the refit items. We supported the Owner through advertising, shipyard evaluation, and contract negotiations. We provided full time engineering and production support while the conversion was underway in Singapore.
Constant Coring Missions Enabled
The refit process was completed in 2008. Main features of the refit included new superstructure for labs and quarters (1200 long tons of new steel) for a 27% increase in overall square footage of science facilities, and revised space arrangements for an increase in lab arrangements. The vessel was completely updated and essentially made “new” again during this extensive refit. JOIDES Resolution continues to conduct science all over the world, giving us a window into the depths of the earth underneath the ocean.
