The distinctive-looking Sea-Based X-Band Radar (SBX-1) is a self-propelled, semi-submersible radar vessel and the setting for the 2022 Netflix movie Interceptor starring Elsa Pataky. While it’s not able to launch missiles like the movie suggests, it is still an integral part of the US Department of Defense Ballistic Missile Defense System. The vessel is over 280 feet tall and the large white structure at the top is an air-inflated radome housing X-band radar.

Boeing hired Glosten as the engineering integrator and designer for all marine aspects of the SBX-1. We provided a range of technical services throughout the life of the project, including the mooring system design for a permanent eight-point MODU-style mooring installation in Adak, Alaska.
