This paper was developed to provide the reader with supplemental background information on a proposed series of shipboard field tests. These tests would use a tracer dye to determine the efficiency of novel methods to mix biocides into ship’s ballast water for the emergency inactivation of aquatic non-indigenous species (NIS) and harmful pathogens. This paper also provides background information for planning the coordination of the field tests with numerical modeling and scale testing efforts.
